November 25, 2001:

Less than two months after the start of the operation, Sergeant First Class Nathan R. Chapman becomes the first American soldier to die in combat in Afghanistan. He is fatally shot during an ambush by Taliban forces near the city of Khost.


March 4, 2002:

US Army Sergeant Orlando Morales becomes the first American service member killed in combat after the fall of the Taliban. He dies during a firefight with enemy forces in eastern Afghanistan.


June 28, 2005:

Tragedy strikes when a US Navy SEAL team, consisting of 11 members, is on a reconnaissance mission in the Kunar Province. A rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) hits their helicopter, causing it to crash.
